These handy tips will help make the most of any bbq leftovers

Don’t relegate leftover barbecue meats to simple sandwiches or - no, don’t say it - the bin! Reinvent your flavourful proteins into new recipes and transform leftovers into easy dinners, quick lunches and even portable picnic fare.

Storage and reheating

The correct storage is so important when it comes to food. Leftover barbecue meat should be stored exactly the same way as any other cooked meat and the correct containers can make all the difference.

Just pop any meat into airtight containers, making sure to keep it separate from other non-meat leftovers. Alternatively you can wrap it tightly in tin foil and refrigerate immediately. Keep in the fridge up to four days, or store in the freezer for up to a month.

If grabbing leftover barbecued meat from the freezer, defrost in the fridge, then cook thoroughly again when you’re ready to eat – especially sausages or other pre-processed meats.

Serving cold

Forget reheating barbecued leftovers altogether and instead slice and serve with fresh salads and wraps. Here are three options:

  1. Thinly slice cooked steak and whip up some Vietnamese or Chinese-inspired rice paper rolls.
  2. Pair leftover butterflied lamb (or any leftover lamb) with lentils and a homemade pickle to serve up a picnic-friendly lamb wrap.
  3. Shred chicken and throw into a delicious noodle salad, or flake white fish and use as a filling for top-notch tacos.

Serving hot

Sometimes it's easier to reinvent what was left from the night before.

Grab the leftover sausages and chop them into small pieces. Combined with creamy scrambled egg they will make for a hearty breakfast everyone will enjoy.

With wilted spinach and pillowy eggs, you simply can’t go wrong. But that's not all, they can also feature in pasta, such as with fresh, tender broccoli for a perfect midweek dinner.

Tear up remaining barbecue chicken and toss into a fragrant and spicy noodle soup, perfect for a starter or healthy lunch. Slice leftover grilled pork and flash fry in a wok with thinly-sliced, fresh veggies for a quick stir-fry when you're short on time.
