Gooey recipes to celebrate National Toasted Marshmallow Day

It might be a little too warm to sit around a campfire, but that doesn't mean we can't find inspiring ways to enjoy melted marshmallows.

National Toasted Marshmallow Day is celebrated every year on August 30th and to celebrate here's a few DIY ways to cook with the soft, sticky sweets.

They are easy, delicious and can be enjoyed by the whole family, even long after the August celebrations have passed. Give them a go, all in he name of culinary research, obviously.

Ancient Egyptians were the first to enjoy the gooey treat we now know as the marshmallow.

As early as 2000 BC it was reserved for gods and royalty and was made from the mallow plant (Athaea officinalis) that grows wild in marshes.

Sticky mini waffles

Fancy a decadent treat? All you need are a few Belgium waffles and some jumbo toasted marshmallows.

  1. Cut the waffles into four quarters.
  2. Drizzle with your favourite sauce.
  3. Place a marshmallow on the waffle.
  4. Microwave for 15-20 seconds.
  5. Place the waffle "top" on your sandwich.

The marshmallow kind of acts like a replacement for traditional whipped cream. You can even add fresh fruit on top if you’re feeling like pushing the boat out.

Ice cream topping

Add some warm, toasty, mini marshmallows to ice cream, or even a milkshake — it really is a game changer.

Pair your gooey mess with raspberry or blueberry ice cream, add chocolate or coffee syrup and finish with crushed nuts.

The addition of melted marshmallows means other ingredients can be pushed into the sticky blobs, in order for them to appear as if they float atop sundaes or milkshake drinks.

S’mores dessert pizza

It doesn't get much better than a sweet, chocolaty dessert made just like a pizza. It’s got the classic s’mores (marshmallow and chocolate) flavours and is super easy to make.

Topped with fluffy marshmallows, choccie chips, runny sauce, nuts if you like, all melted together into the most amazing s’mores pizza.

Dessert pizzas are easy and fun to make and even more fun to eat. We love the coloured marshmallows to add a splash of fun to your tasty treat.
