Celebrate the jam-filled, glazed or sprinkle-topped circles

Round, fried and delicious, of course the tasty donut (or doughnut) has its own international holiday.

National Donut Day falls on the first Friday of June every year, and yes, that's today (Friday, June 2).

While it started as a US food holiday, it's now celebrated all over the world in a variety of different ways.

Unlike many other food holidays, which lack a little significance, the history of National Donut Day is as rich as the many fillings and toppings you can choose today.

National Donut Day dates back to World War I when the female volunteers of the Salvation Army cooked donuts for American GIs overseas.

The tradition carried on through the Great Depression when the Chicago Salvation Army claimed National Donut Day as an official holiday in order to celebrate the female volunteers who championed the GIs during the war.

It became an official food holiday in the USA in 1938.

5 ways to celebrate

Do a donut run!

Eating donuts is the easiest way to mark the occasion. It's kind of a no-brainer, but maybe there's a flavour you've wanted to try or you have a favourite donut that needs sharing. Pick up everything from jam-filled treats to chocolate-covered rounds. Just do it.

Hold a donut party

In honour of the Salvation Army ladies, who served donuts to soldiers during WW1, you could host a donut breakfast for neighbours or friends.

Eat "healthier" donuts

In need of a break from sugar? Don't worry, here's a fun healthy donut idea for you.

Why not try making apple donuts.

  1. Core an apple.
  2. Cut the apple horizontally into thick rings.
  3. Spread with cream cheese or peanut butter.
  4. Add sprinkles.

Deliver donuts to the office

Surprise someone with a box of donuts!

Nobody will complain if a thoughtful (and tasty) delivery is dropped on the doorstep.

Make donuts

Try something new by making donuts. Try different fillings and share them with friends and family.
