One of the best summer treats, enjoy a few new ways with watermelon

It's simple and easy to eat, so if you're already satisfied with that sweet, juicy crunch, why not take things to another level?

Versatile watermelon can also be eaten in a variety of delicious ways.

Here are a few ideas, along with some interesting facts about the fruit.

Watermelon pizza

Watermelons usually have red flesh, but some watermelons have white, yellow, orange or even green flesh.

Use the different colours to create pizza slices and top them with fresh fruits, cream cheese, nuts and seeds.

Our summer favourite is coconut flakes, strawberries and a dollop of whipped coconut cream.

A great choice if you're looking for a vegan snack or healthy dessert.

Fresh watermelon juice

Watermelon is also high in vitamin C and a good source of fibre.

Juicing is a great way to enjoy all the goodness of this water-filled fruit.

  1. According to Guinness World Records, the largest watermelon ever grown was grown in Arkansas by Lloyd Bright and weighed 120kg.
  2. Watermelons are 92% water and early explorers sometimes carried watermelons instead of canteens.
  3. There are more than 300 types of watermelons grown in the USA, although only about 50 varieties are grown for grocery stores.
  4. We think of watermelon as a fruit because of its sweet flavour, but watermelon is actually a vegetable. It belongs to the cucurbit family, and is related to pumpkins, cucumbers and squash.
  5. In Egypt and Africa, people often pair watermelon with salty feta cheese. The salt brings out the juice and flavour of watermelon.
  6. Watermelon is a health food and has only 40 calories per cup, yet it has more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant which can reduce inflammation and destroy free radicals.
  7. The Japanese grow square watermelon by placing square glass boxes around a growing fruit so it becomes square as it grows. The Japanese like them because they’re small and don’t roll around and fit neatly in a refrigerator.
  8. A man called Jason Schayot is an expert watermelon seed spitter and holds the world record for watermelon seed spitting at almost 23 metres, set in 1995.
  9. Producers in America grow more than four billion pounds of watermelon each year, and Americans eat more watermelon by weight than any other fruit.
  10. The American writer Mark Twain loved watermelon and called it the “food of angels”.
